The Indigenous People of Mexico Want to Be Free
The Indigenous people of Mexico want to be free,
They want to have the same rights as you and me,
For centuries their ancestor's ruled the land,
Till it was taken from them by men with guns in their hands,
Men who came in search of gold,
Who ravaged the world of old,
Who believed that lives could be bought or sold,
Who claimed this world as their own,
They rise with the sun and work the whole day through,
Breathing pesticides and dust into their lungs,
You can't say they don't work hard, they work harder than us,
But when they get home at night, they ain't got enough,
They ain't got no running water, like you and I,
They ain't got no wooden floors, no they can't afford to buy,
They ain't got no electrical power running into their houses,
They ain't got no political power to do anything about it.
The Indigenous people of Mexico want to be free,
They want to have the same rights as you and me
Their government claims there's freedom, that they're a democracy,
But almost every election is won by the same political party,
I doubt that the Mayans in Chiapas,
Would have voted for NAFTA,
Or the tax free Maquiladoras,
That exploit the poor.
Or the elimination of tariffs, upon US imports
That hurt their ability to earn a living growing corn,
The Indigenous people of Mexico want to be free,
They want to have the same rights as you and me,
For centuries their ancestor's ruled the land,
Till it was taken from them by men with guns in their hands,
Hw can you claim there's freedom
When people are killed
And drafted into the army
Against their will
And driven off of their land
At gunpoint
How long will it be before they reach their breaking point
